| 20 oz soda for an extra $1.99 | Re: 90% of peaches lost in Georgia, more crops lost What has happened to America's honeybees? Last fall, beekeepers from states with warm climates began to report a sudden loss of honey bees. Losses were reported in twenty-four states and into Canada. Today, some beekeepers say thirty percent to ninety percent of their honey bees are gone. Food prices could go up as a result. And some beekeeping businesses have failed. Many kinds of plants, trees and grasses need bees to pollinate them. Bees gather nectar from flowers during this process. The liquid gives them food and material to make honey. As the bees land on flowers, their bodies pick up and drop off fine particles of pollen. Most flowering plants need pollination to reproduce. Honey bees can die during the winter. But few dead bees have been found. Instead, the bees seem to have disappeared. Experts call the condition "colony collapse disorder." Agriculture Department official Caird Rexroad said the collapse threatens about fifteen billion dollars worth of the country's farm economy. Mister Rexroad commented at a hearing of a House of Representatives agriculture subcommittee. Mister Rexroad said the cause of the sudden loss of bees is not clear. The number of honey bees already had fallen before the colony collapse disorder began. Experts say the varroa mite is at least partly responsible for the earlier decrease in honeybees. The mite is a tiny creature that feeds on honeybees. It may play a part in colony collapse disorder by carrying bee viruses. Or the problem may be caused by other diseases and weather conditions. A group of scientists is examining bees from more than one hundred colonies across the country. The researchers also are studying the pollen, honey, and wax that the bees produce. They are working with the Agriculture Department's Agricultural Research Service. Diana Cox-Foster of Pennsylvania State University is part of the scientific group. Miz Cox-Foster says the nation needs honeybees that can defend themselves better against disease and insects. The recent mapping of most of the honeybee's genes offers hope of a stronger honeybee some day. And that's the VOA Special English Agriculture Report, written by Jerilyn Watson. No shit. My great grandpa, grandpa, and uncle are all farmers. You really don't know how much weather fucks up crops until you talk to one about it. They have to replant fields at least once a year, and lost crops due to not enough rain, etc. So, I don't pay much attention to it, and focus on statistics, which there is just not enough that are accurate and go back far enough to make any kind of scientific determination. Al Gore and the rest of the environMENTAL crowd are just alarmists. They want people to be panicking, they want them to be scared for their lives, they want hurricanes and famines to destroy peoples property and lives. Why? Because it passes off their agenda as 'the truth' when in reality, they have absolutely no idea what they are talking about and are proving over and over again how gullible the American (and world) population is. |

| est. May 8, 1986 | Re: 90% of peaches lost in Georgia, more crops lost Or, there is a dramatic change happening and we will have much to adapt to. I mean, sure nothing can be proven until it happens but there have been some pretty crazy happenings not just in America but all over the world. Tsunamis, earthquakes, monster hurricanes, missing glaciers, extreme heat, and here in MI, a blizzard in April. I know these are all natural occurances but it is obnoxious to think that the way humans have been polluting and changing the earth isnt going to make in impact somehow. |

We are just noticing these hurricanes and tsunamis now, well not noticing them as a whole, but their effect because of our population. Population has grown, so mother nature has more of a chance to cause destruction and harm upon us.
We survived one ice age, we will adapt and survive another. It's the survival of the fittest, and if you believe in God, then it's his will, whathaveyou, etc... That's my take on it anyways... I am far from saying that we as humans should not clean up our act, but the way the environmental alarmists are making it out to be and the way they want to go about changing things, the ends just do not justify the means. |

| Hence, my self-loathing | Re: 90% of peaches lost in Georgia, more crops lost Hi Manda! You know I am older than a lot of you whippersnappers here, so let me tell you things that I have seen. When I was a boy, I had to walk 2 miles to school everyday, up hill both ways.....Whoops wrong story.... I remember when it used to be colder in the Winter. I also remember bad storms and floods, and hurricanes. I remember warmer winters and Hotter summers than we have now. Now if I so choose I can make a general assumption that the Earth has gotten hotter, the sun stronger, during my life. And that is pretty remarkable, until you think that I have lived but for 47 of the Earth's 4 Billion Years. So can my lifetime or the last 500 years really predict a trend? I think not. I am sure what we as humans are doing to the planet is not good, but I believe more damage is being done to the Earth through deforestation and strip mining than by our Carbon Dioxide release. One misplaced solar flare one day could end all life on Earth overnight, but we can't help that can we. It's all Imus's fault! |

A small climate change does not constitute a threat to humankind, and if it is, it's already far too late. |

| Zazoul | Re: 90% of peaches lost in Georgia, more crops lost I couldn't find any stats on it but I'd like jew or annon to find me the last time two major crops were both completely wiped out in one season... I could easily be wrong on this one, but how many events does it take for people to believe |
