Al Sharpton's ancestors were slaves owned by Strom Thurmond's relatives, genealogists find

(New York - WABC, February 25, 2007) - The late Senator Strom Thurmond, who once fought against civil rights, and Reverend Al Sharpton, widely recognized for his defense of civil rights.
It's the shock of a lifetime and a truly ironic twist of fate. "It was probably the most shocking thing in my life," Sharpton said at a news conference Sunday, the same day the tabloid revealed the story.
The reverend Al Sharpton is a descendant of slaves who were once the property of the Thurmonds, ancestors of the late senator Strom Thurmond is perhaps one of the strongest supporters of south segregation.
The news broke Sunday morning on the cover of the Daily News. Their findings were from ancestry.com, a website that tracks people's roots.
After an extensive search, they found that the reverend's great grandfather, Coleman Sharpton, his wife and two children were given as a gift to Julia Thurmond. Julia's grandfather is Strom Thurmond's great grandfather.
Thurmond, of South Carolina, was once considered an icon of racial segregation. During his 1948 bid for president, he promised to preserve segregation and, in 1957, he filibustered for more than 24 hours against a civil rights bill.
So what is next?? The reverend says he's not really sure. This painful journey into his past has made him focus on the future.
He now encourages all African Americans to look into their roots.

my family has been in america since the 1650's and my earliest family in america were the sons of a scottish king so im sure they had slaves...ima keep the ol supersoaker filled up and by the door just in case someone knocks on my door expecting an apology
