BURRILLVILLE, R.I. --A strike by a teachers' union has shut down Burrillville schools until at least Friday, when a Superior Court judge is scheduled to decide whether to order the teachers back to work.
Burrillville school officials canceled the first day of classes on Wednesday when they couldn't reach an agreement with the local teachers' union and the teachers voted to strike. Superintendent Steven Welford said he's also canceled sports practices and games.
No one has fully disclosed the sticking points, but officials on both sides have said they include health care payments and class sizes.
School district attorney Ronald Cascione has asked Superior Court Judge Netti Vogel to issue a restraining order banning the teachers from striking. In court documents, he called the strike illegal and said it could be "indefinite" because both sides remain far apart on key issues.
Patrick Crowley, a spokesman for the union, said union members would obey a court order.

1. School teachers work an average of 9 months out of the year yet recieve a salary 12 months of the year.

1 - Their salary's are spread over 12 months to keep money coming in when they are off.

2 - that is not really correct

3 - True, Tenure assists bad teachers more than it does the good ones and the whole process should be modified to include some standards of merit to maintain Tenure.

4 - Not really, they need to Kill, attempt to kill, or have sex with their students to get fired.

It's the only profession I can think of that does this. It's retarded, especially when tax dollars are at work. Find a job for the rest of the year, it's silly to suggest they get paid for 3 months they are not at a job working.

If my job was dealing with 30 screaming brats Id need at least three months vacation. God bless the teachers but not the striking bitch ass money grubbing teachers. Teaching is a job you shouldnt go into for the money, much like police officers. Its a public service type thing.

The problem is the way you are looking at it. They are not getting paid for time they don't work. Example :They get $60K a year, Beep done. What is the difference if they get 12 payments of $5000, or 9 Payments $6,666, or 2 payments of $30k? It's the same salary. Same amount.

We are not talking about what teachers are paid in amounts, but they deserve it. The average business person if faced with teaching children would go postal in about 3 days. And I'm talking big time postal.
