Police Chief's Gun, Vest Stolen From SUV POSTED: 1:24 pm EDT March 17, 2008 UPDATED: 4:24 pm EDT March 17, 2008 ORMOND BEACH, Fla. -- A Central Florida police chief's gun and bulletproof vest were stolen from his vehicle at his home over the weekend, police said.Ormond Beach Police Chief Michael Longfellow's sport utility vehicle was broken into between 5 p.m. Saturday and 4:30 p.m. Sunday, police said.The handgun, a black Glock 9 mm, the vest, which has "Police" written on it, a gun holster, a camera bag, camera equipment and five $1 bills were stolen from the Dodge Durango, police said. Longfellow said he takes responsibility for not removing the items from his vehicle, which he said was locked. Police said there were no signs of forced entry into the SUV.The Ormond Beach Police Department told Local 6 News that officers are responsible for securing firearms in a safe place and taking reasonable precautions with them. Police said there are some cases in which a weapon is preferred to be left in a vehicle.An investigation into the theft is under way.Watch Local 6 News for more on this story. | ||||
