Alfred Nobel's will stated the Nobel Peace Prize was to go to "the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses". Alfred Nobel held a radical vision of peace and so those winners should share this radical view. Alas, Barack Obama does not. But I dont think they gave it to him because he's such a "celebrity". They gave it to him because they thought it would persuade him to simply withdraw from all three wars. As if a gold coin from a bunch of irrelevant Norwegians would have the power to transform almost 150-odd years of American foreign policy. This was more an issue of the Nobel people's ego than it was Obama's popularity. | ||||

To be fair, he did say he wanted to pursue the war in Afghanistan further and he also said on numerous occasions that he would expand the war into Pakistan.
He was pretty honest in these respects. But the image he projected was different - mainly because people wanted to believe he was the anti-war candidate even though he wasn't. | ||||
