| Freak | cable "lag" or "delay" i always thought this was wierd. cable runs like this. from the outlet in the living room to a splitter, from the splitter to the cable box on one line and from the splitter to another splitter on another line. then from the splitter in the pc room to the modem on one line, the tv in the pc room on another line and to the tv in the bedrrom on the last. the tv in the bedroom is furthest away from where the cable comes into the apartment and the tv in the living room is closest. right now they are all 3 on the same channel. there is a 2 second delay between the tv in the bedroom to the tv in the pc room and 2 seconds from the pc room to the living room. so thats a 4 second delay from the bedroom to the living room. the picture/audio hits the tv in the bedroom first which is furthest away, then the pc room whixh is in the middle and then the living room. you would think that the tv in the living room first off the line would get it first. any of you with multiple tv's notice anything like that? |

![]() ![]() | Re: cable "lag" or "delay" I haven't really checked but I have a simular setup and can't get on-demand on all tv's. If I were you, from the first splitter - send one to the computer and split off the other run to all the tv's which is how I have mine..the tv line has a total of 4 splitters on it and at the end of the line is just basic seervice analog cable. ....odd about the lag tho as I wouldn't think it would be noticable...let me do some bongs and ponder this.

![]() ![]() | Re: cable "lag" or "delay" All that splitting is killing your Internet. We had mine on just the splitter outside and one splitter in here, and I kept getting dropped connections and slow downloads. You might want to have the cable guy come out and put a cable amplifier in. Just run your Internet on one unamplified line and your TVs on the other amplified line. It'll not only make your internet faster and more stable, you'll also get better TV reception. But in answer to your question, no I never noticed a delay. Of course that's probably because I never watched the same things my folks did so I was never on the same channel as them.

| Freak | Re: cable "lag" or "delay" what would i benefit from going to the modem first? i think the whole deal is wierd. i can only get on demand on the one tv in the living room with the cable box. thats normal though. on tv's with no box i only get the basic 70 or so channels |

![]() ![]() | Re: cable "lag" or "delay" I don't kow what cable box you have but on mine "scientific Atalnta" on the actual box if you hold the select button, it will tell you signal stats. and you can't use on demand if your db's drop below -16 or something like that but anyway, your internet will work best if connected directly as possible, especially if all your other splitters are like radio shack junk which loose signal and don't connect for digital signal right. They are ok for traditional cable tv tho. If you ever look at a cable, the thin thin foil on the outside of the white plastic actually carries the internet and on-demand signal. Basically, tho if your computer runs fine for you, no need to fuck with it but if you have a few hours to pass with some nice sativa, can't hurt to play around with it hehe The benfit of going directly would only be noticeable in multiplayer fsp games or trying to snipe bid on ebay where you can literallyt wait to the last second to submit bids

![]() ![]() | Re: cable "lag" or "delay" The modem needs it's own separate line or you get all sorts of nasty connection problems. Ideally it should be on an unsplit line, but there's no way to do that in a residence where TV is watched as well without putting in another cable. And there is no cable company in the world that will install another separate cable to a residence without charging you the life of your first born, if at all. At least not that I'm aware of. Jesus that's long. So the cable has to be split once outside, or under the house or whatever. That is the absolute maximum you want to split the cable because any more from my understanding, degrades the signal too much. So with three TVs and a computer you need an amplifier. You get crystal clear reception and the modem gets it's own line. It'll be especially noticeable if your cable company ever upgrades their service and gives you more bandwidth.

| Hence, my self-loathing | Re: cable "lag" or "delay" The Amp has to be rated for Data to work correctly with a modem. Motorola makes a good data quality amp. The Cable modem sould be run from the first splitter in the house. Sorry for the redundant answer guys, your all on the right track. |

![]() ![]() | Re: cable "lag" or "delay" The amp we got just runs our TVs. I had it hooked up to my All-In-Wonder and it fried it. So now I have a VCR between the Amplified cable and my new AIW.

![]() ![]() | Re: cable "lag" or "delay" yeah, I have an video amp on my tv line between splitters 3 and 4 and figured the signal path was only one way but it apparently doesn't touch the digital signal in the foil as I was able to use on demand with a tv post amp as a test , but it took like 5 mins for the guide to even pop up.

| Freak | Re: cable "lag" or "delay" i do appreciate the help though. the wierd thing i noticed about the amp is it goes from the wall to the amp and then from the amp to the splitter via coax cable. then from coax cable to an electrical outlet for power. thats wierd. i know it needs power but to run it through a coax line was kind of strange i thought |

![]() ![]() | Re: cable "lag" or "delay" that is odd...and frankly, running power through coax just smacks of communism! hehe coax has a alot of bandwidth and people run phone signals through power outlets so I guess anything is possible...

| Freak | Re: cable "lag" or "delay" one of the coax lines has a plug at the end and it fuckin plugs into the wall. never seen that before |
