Michelin, the company that invented the radial tire, has rolled out a
radical new concept called the Tweel. As this prototype demonstrates, the
traditional rubber tire and solid wheel duo is replaced by a tread bonded
to a strong loop of composite material. The vehicle's weight hangs from a
series of polymer plastic spokes that connect this loop to the hub. The
flexible Tweel can bear the load of a pneumatic tire four times its size,
it can cushion bumps five times better than a pneumatic tire, and the
contact area can be nearly doubled for improved handling. Noise, mass, and
rolling resistance have to be improved before this promising new technology
is ready for high-speed, high-load passenger-car applications

I'd be worried about lateral strength, missing because of the lack of a solid sidewall. Looks a little too easy to shed the Belt too...

annon, it says that those can take 4 times the weight or a normal tire. if you think about it sidewalls are not all the sturdy on regular tires. it's the weakest part of the tire actually.

OK that sound reassuring. And yeah, I know about the sidewall thing, I've replaced tires that had tread left on them because the sidewalls were crap. When you take the tire off the rim you can see how weak the sidewall is. Only one thing left to figure with these tires, where are they going to put the "Michelin" Logo's?

annon when i worked at goodyear we busted a lot of tires. even the higher techs. you'd be suprised at some of the shit that can be found in a tire. i pulled a dead frog out of one. a butter knife out of another and a fork out of another.
people just came in to get new tires and you bust it off the rim and there is a butter knife in there. they picked it up on the road somewhere

the bead is just the seal between the edge of the rim and tire. something going through the tread to the inside of the tire wouldn't break the bead but it baffled all of us as to how a knife or fork could slip all the way through without the tire going flat or the driver noticing

yea, thats what I was wondering... by bead I just meant the seal. how the fuck would that shit go through without breaking the seal...
