do you think smoking should be banned in public places?

i think it should. i lurk over at abovetopsecret and there is a thread with some srgument about it and it got me thinking.
some of the srguments i see are it's about their rights and they have as many rights as non smokers do and they should be able to smoke wherever they want.
i am on the bandwagon to have it banned in places like restaurants and malls and shit.
the thing is that smoking in those types of places directly effects the people around them.people should be able to do whatever they want as long as it does not directly effect other people.
if i am at a restaurant and i am waiting for a table and there is a guy next to me smoking, he is forcing me to breathe that shit in, he is forcing my hair and clothes to smell. thats why i think it should be banned. direct effect.
what about the people that have it real bad? they start to hack, their eyes burn, they get headaches.

i hate being that way but damn man. nothing worse than being at a restaurant trying to eat a good steak and there is all the smoke permiating through the air and shit.

i also like it when you ask to sit in a non smoking section and they sit you 5 feet away from the smoking section. i don't say be a total dick...parks and bars and clubs and shit i say smoke uop.

but places like sit down restaurants it should not be allowed. just one huys opinion and i used to smoke for like 10 years.

also, when i smoked i never smoked in any restaurant. of course i did at bars but never at food joints

I think it should be banned, it's proven ciggarette smoking can cause a mulititude of helath problems, and you can get that from second hand smoke too. So being in a room with smokers trying to eat your dinner or having a drink at the bar is like a silent punch to the gut every minute.

Restaurants are private property therefor the publics opinion about whether smoking should or should not be allowed in them is irrelevant. Anyone who thinks they can tell a business owner how they can run their business can go to hell. You don't want to breath smoke? Don't eat there

they banned smoking from all public buildingings in nyc, i'm pretty sure...

being an occasional cig smoker, i don't really mind not being able to smoke in restaurants, i understand that it bothers alot of people...

i think most people can grasp the concept that it directly effects other people in a negative way. other don't care. fuck that, if you don't like it don't go out.

it's not like i'm saying they are fuckin illegal. would it really be that bad for there to be no smoking in restaurants? i mean, a smoker can't sit down for 40 minutes without dragging on one?

lucky for me, things are going in the way of the non smoker. i hate breathing that shit in man.

i wouldn't really care, i'm not a fiend...

some people get used to smoking while or after they eat, and some people actually can't go 40 minutes without smoking... those kind of people usually bitch about rights... but i don't really know what to say about that... fuck em' i guess...

I'n Oregon all public places smoking is mostly not allowed... some places (restraunts so on) allow it but they have a closed in place for people who want to eat and smoke.

i'm mostly concerned with restaurants. i know it's "private" property but it's sole function is to cater to the public. it's not private property like your house. i just don't agree that it should be allowed because when people smoke in restaurants(and everywherein public) they are forcing others to inhale their sechand smoke that contains all those chemicals and carcinogens. it's not right. people say that is taking away from smokers rights but those rights should not sirectly effect other people.

like i said man, those restaurants are private property but it's only reason for being is for public use.
