Nearly 20 students are receiving anti-viral drugs to prevent HIV after being pricked by a needle in school, officials said.
A third-grader at Taylor Elementary School in Hunting Park was suspended after pricking students Wednesday with one of her mother’s diabetic needles. Students were taken to St. Christopher’s Hospital for blood tests Wednesday, but then returned to the hospital yesterday after officials learned one of the student’s pricked tested positive for HIV.
School and health officials met with parents and students yesterday and then later with members of the community to address concerns.
Some parents voiced their outrage of the incident.
“You’ve got every parent concerned, every parent worried,” Mike Gonzales, a parent of a child who was stuck, told Channel 6.
“This is a nightmare for us. I got to go to bed every night thinking my daughter has HIV,” another parent said.
Officials tried to assure parents that exposure to HIV does not automatically ensure infection and that early treatment with the drugs will prevent the virus from taking effect in the body. Officials said students will take the retroviral therapy for up to three months if they can tolerate the side effects, which include upset stomach.

Yep heard about that (don't know if this is in that article) but it turns out one of the kids who she did stab had HIV possitive from her parents. But it's a .075 percent chance of spreading it through such a small needle (info from watching news this morning) :)

Most likly it all comes down to the parents giving the girl the needle in the first place, so yeah hang the parents :).

i doubt the parent "gave" the kid the needle but it was the parents needle

whenever i hear about stuff like this... i don't know if i can completely blame the parents... i mean, sometimes a little kid can be a dumb little asshole on his own... he could of stolen the needles a number of different ways...

it's not about the theft of a needle. it's about the kids not following the rules or even thinking about doing something like this in the first place. parents are way too lenient with their children.

yeah, but there doesn't seem to be a perfect way of parenting... it could of been ultimately caused by the parents neglect of discipline... but sometimes, even when parents show alot, thier kids still turn out little monsters...

- take me for example, my parents always tell me, that i was a little devil when i was little, i would do all kinds of shit, and they would usually beat me, but then afterward, i would go right back to what i was doing.

some kids just can't be tamed so easily...

maybe "beating" you was not the answer.

i am a fim believer that kids that show problems like this and like you had could have used parents that were more "involved"

grounding, beating, punishing, takign things away, that does not make up for mothers and fathers that are not around.

a kid who is left alone a lot but beaten when he breaks the rules will probably break more rules than a kid who's parents is in the know.

you're right in saying there is no perfect way of parenting but a lot of parents are not as involved as they should.

instead of say, the mother going out every night to the bar and beating her kid when she ets home cause they broke the rules, don't go to the bar.

i agree with you on this, but they were around all the time, its just thats how they thought they should handle the situation, because thats both of them were raised... and thats also another factor, alot of people, end up mimicking thier parent's parenting style.

some people let thier kids do whatever, not enough parents take an assertive stance, its usually passive or aggresive

They just said on the news (Philadelphia) that now the kids from the school that didn't get pricked are making fun of the kids that did by saying stuff like "you're gonna die" "you're gonna get us all killed".
