would norton antivirus screw up my internet connection and block me from getting online, even though the modem is all lit

let me give you a little background. for about a week now, my internet will go in and out. the only difference this time is all the lights on my modem would be lit. usually, if there is no connection, my online light blinks. this last week, i'd be on the forum and i'd refresh a page or something and no connection. open a new window and can't get on the net.

if i unplugged the modem, and then plugged it back in, then the light would blink.

had a tech come out and all he said was if the lights are lit and i'm not online, it's not on their end.
tech support told me it could be my router so bypass it for a day to see what happens. i did that it the trouble stuill happened to i guess it's not the router.

then i noticed in my taskbar at the bottom right, my norton symbol had a little x through it. i went through the trouble shooting and it was still messed up. went to their website and their quick fix wouldn't work.

what it was basically saying was that this problem that was going on with norton could effect some or all programs from connecting to the net. i figured this may be the problem.

i set a restore point, uninstalled norton and then installed the free symantec antivirus software. the same one i use on my laptop that you gave me.

it's been about 8 hours now and it hasn't done it yet.

what i'm wondering is do you think it's just coincedence thats it's not happening or could faulty/bad/whatever antivirus software cause that?

i had the same problem.....just a few weeks ago...it would just just randomly go offline. drove me nuts. and was told it was my router too.

i was using IE, i've d/l firefox and i've had no problems. don't know if it was my IE, or a virus or what but it's working now........

This happens alot. If you can figure out which programs it conflicts with you can make exception within Norton (I think) but I know nothing about that. Norton has been known for being very intrusive and come into conflict with other programs, and I shy away the customers that call in away from it for this very reason.

I use EZ Antivirus, and I have never had a virus on my computer.

i've had norton on it for several months and i've had the router for months too. this literally just started like a week ago. my connection would go down from time to time but my online light would always blink. now though, it stays lit.

i bought a new splitter, 5-1100 and 7.5db's. i capped off all my open ends of whatever splitter so no noise escapes.

this symantev antivirus is pretty god. annon gave me the heads up on it when i got my laptop. it's free and not a resource hog.

i'm wondering why norton went retarded all of a suddon.

it wouldn't allow me to turn on auto protect and when i started digging thats when i read on their site that it can prevent some or all programs from connecting to the net.
i seem to be good now, just didn't know if it was a coinkidink

Hey Boon,

How you doing guy. If I read you right, you had Norton (Was it Internet Security or Just AV?) on your system and you removed it and put on the Corp Edition I sent you. If that is not correct let me know.

But- Norton Internet Security and the Regular AV verisons starting with 2005 have Firewall SW built in, and I have seen that SW crap the bed more than once, and that will keep the machine off the internet (When this system can't get on, does the laptop still work?). Usually a complete uninstall and re-install will fix it. (Sometimes a LiveUpdate will do it too, but not usually). If you removed it and put on the Corp edition I sent you you should be OK. Just remember to schedule liveUpdates via the File menu in the Symantec Corp Edition.
