what i want to do is get something else on the left hand and i have the all clear. what i'm thinking is a skull that is like completely made of smoke or some shit, kind of like an apparition of a skull but all in red, no black..i think that would be sick...what do you think?

Hmm, instead of red why not go for a brown/fawn/ochre kind of colour? What about Hannya or another Japanese noh-type deity??



Something a bit like that but done in the colours I was talking about? Smoke features a lot in traditional irezumi, so you could encorporate the wispy them you had into it, perhaps use faint browney smoke to make the mask look almost like it's fading into sight from your skin?

I meant to say btw that your new tattoo is really amazing, considering it was freehand and all, I can't believe you got it for the price you did (I can't remember now if it was $100 or not)....

tattooists here are a LOT more expensive and not as good, well, your freehand is better than a lot of flash-based tattoos I've seen...

it' the biggest reason I've not gotten my arm finished yet...the tattooist that does it is okay skill-wise, sound ability but no real flair, hence why I've not gone back, plus she charges £60 an hour..think I'll just get the basics of the dragon finished and find someone else to do the rest of my work...thing is, I'm a few hours drive from the next nearest decent ink slinger.....

Only reason I was trying to steer you away from red was it's the colour most likely to fade, and with it being on your hand it's going to be exposed to UV almost constantly, but it's your body, so (obviously) go with whatever your heart feels is right, with your tattooist's skills it'll look killer whatever you choose.

this guy is pretty amazing. i go for freehand as much as possible cause i don't like having tatts that other people have too.

i seem to hold ink real well. the fading issue has a lot of variables. how well the artists gets the ink in there, the type of ink, and how you care for it


some inks come pre made and others are a powder that the artist mixes themselfves. some pre made inks are cheap. i make sure that they use good inks or i won't bother with them. been doing this long enough to know the difference.

i always ask what needle config they are using when they are outlining and shading. every artist has a preference but i can tell if something should be different.

fr instance, this skull that he just did, some artist would use a shader with a configuration of 7 or 9 needles to get the thick black parts like the eyes and such. he was using his own configuration of 26..shit like that makes te difference

a lot of guys buy their needles pre soldered on the bars while others, like this guy, has a jig and he solders his own configurations. i say that right there is the single most important thing when getting the ink in there solid.


you've seen some tatta that when they are done and the scab has fallen off and it's all healed, there are gaps in their colors. thats mostly due to configuration or the wron configuration


some guys that really don't care as much will shade you with a configuration of 3 needles when they can be using 7 and up.

the thing is, some people are god tatt artists but they don't put forth that extra effort. they buy the cheap inks to save a buck and they look good but they fade.

they use the per made needle bars with the standard configs of 3, 4, 5, 7, and maybe 9. no matter what..some pieces that have this spots like your blackwork igf and my hand could use needles that have maybe 25 or so...it takes less strokes to fill it in so the skin gtes less irritated and the color reall gets pounded in there.

there are very few around these days that put in that extra effort. they are doing it just to make a buck and they should get paid well but they should also treat each piece like it's special and quite frankly, they don't.

i knew of 2 guys and 1 just left and went to arizona so i am down to 1.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the lass who does my dragon just wants to get it done as fast as possible...also depth of needles plays a part...the dragon I have is a cover-up of an older tattoo and she went WAY deep when she did that part, so much so, if I squeeze it it feels uncomfy, and the last time she touched me was 2 years ago......

I just feel that the dragon could have been done a little clearer, it's not quite as sharp as I would have hoped, but once she finishes it should look fine, and then I'll go elsewhere to get the rest of my arm completed.....possibly Ohio?? :)

the needles go up and down and protrude out of the end of the tube. the absolute forthest they should come out is half of the width of a us dime. i don't know how wide that is but it's in millimeters. it's not very thick....so at them ost the needle should never go in firther that that. it's possible to not go in that far to give the colors shade and depth but never further than that. you don't have dimes there but i just compared and a dime is pretty close to the same width as a dvd so look at the dvd and it will give you an idea.


when you color/shade you are supposed to go in a circular motion so if you are using a needle with a low configuration or possible someone that makes their won there will be a larger space between each needle and thats what gives those gaps. also, those needles are fragile and when the put that bar through the tube, if the nick the side of the tube and can take off the tip of the needle. you may feel it and you may not but that will make a huge difference.

Hey (back from Chinese getting curry for tea...I am ADDICTED to curries right before my period...)

Erm, I think I heard it said as it's like the needle going through 4 sheets of paper in depth..something like that, don't remember it exactly.

I've got (not counting the covered one) 5 tattoos...hmm, 12-14 hours worth of work, and a grand total of....£520 ($925)...my longest sitting was my armband which took the guy 3 hours...I was in serious pain..not from the tattoo as much as having to sit still in the same position for ages....my plan is to have my arms done, then some stuff on my shoulders going down the centre of my spine maybe..don't know, haven't planned my back till I get the arms done first! But I am behind schedule here, I was hoping to be starting my back by now, but I'm 2 years back :(

4 sheets of paper is about the half the width of a dime...i have sat down in a couple chairs and got right back up cause i kid you not that needle was coming out maybe the witdth of 2 whole dimes. it helps to know what you're getting into.

i am a total tattoo addict. i don't have any on my back and only my smiley faces on my knee caps. i don't think tattoos on the legs of guys looks cool.

i have 2 ideas for my back but i am not settled yet.

i want a monkey, which is corny but i still want it. if i get it it has to be on my back and if not, i want a major back piece with 90 black work and the rest color.


what i want is right at my waste line, i want it to be under water, with a few types of fish/whales/sharks, whatever and come coral and sponges and suck...right before the center of my back to just above the center i want some type of transition to an outer space scene with planets/stars/meteors, and an alien or 2...i want it all black and grey with the exception of the fish, stars, and aliens...i want those to have some color but not a lot...i am looking at about a 3 thousand dollar investment annd maybe 2 years time so i don't know if it will ever happen. the sleeves have to happen first. i WILL have half sleeves as i am almost there. after my half sleeves are sone i will be about 75% there to full sleeves but i don't know if i'll ever get it done..it takes longer than expected cause shit comes up and tatts can't be a priority. i am already behind schedule

That sounds like one fucker of a backpiece Boon...I can really visualise it, and space/underwater go together so well, I mean, with both being such weird enviroments and all (I used to want a lower sleeve that was an underwater scence based on all the stuff you find living out there in the north sea)....you could have it so that the transition starts above the surface of the water, you know, as if it were a sunset, then as you go up have that become darker and darker until it becomes 'space', then have your planets, you should see if you can get the guy to incorporate the Martian face into the general crateriness and such of the planets surface?

I'm the same as you tho, sleeves come first!
