I dunno. People are just so attached to musical preconceptions, that it's hard to break the mold with out people thinking you don't know what you're doing. People don't seem to get that you can INTENTIONALLY make weird/dissonant music.

So I've resolved to just make the music, and if somebody get's it: AWESOME, but I understand that 90% of the population won't get it, and I also understand that the vast majority of Art Music has 0 commercial potential.

LOL. dude you are playing for the wrong people. alot of people out there like to get real weird and atonal. hell we even have a whole noise scene thats been going on here for 30+ years of bands that are strictly weird/dissonant/tension building with very little if any resolution.

Yeah, I've been getting that vibe for a while. The local music scene is overly-saturated with "nu metal"(or so they call themselves), so it's hard to find people who want to make truly original music.

My professor got a copy of a demo disc I made though, and said she thought it was some cool shit, so that was a little uplifting, but by and large the immediate local scene is annoying.

^^ this is why so many bands sell out and make pop shit, because the general public doesnt understand their music. Its a hard scene to get into. Sell your soul to the popular music industry or keep your soul and never be heard of.

Even beyond, that, alot of bands never had any intention of doing anything original. It's the "let's carbon copy [xxxxx] commercially succesful band, so we too can make some quick bucks", mentality that would successfully describe almost all of the local college bands.

it's just stupid. I'm planning on moving back to Portland after this school year. They had a great scene when I left, and the community is generally pretty receptive to new ideas.

Like I said, I'm mostly just whining and ranting. I need to get off my ass, get a new drummer, and schedule some gigs. That way, at least I can say I tried to expose original music to the community.
