A toddler was shot and killed when her father used her as a shield in a gunbattle with police following an hours-long standoff, officials said. The man also died and an officer was wounded.

He was using the baby as a shield," Assistant Police Chief Jim McDonnell said.

"We showed a tremendous amount of restraint, but unfortunately the suspect's actions dictated this," he said. "It's a true tragedy."

The child's mother, Lorena Lopez, said she pleaded with officers to hold their fire.

He had problems with depression, his business was not doing well," Lopez told KNBC-TV. "I told them that he needed help, he needs a psychologist, but please don't shoot. They didn't understand, and the police fired, like, 300 shots

clearly the guy wsa a cock. i'm trying not to pass judgement on the fuzz but i'm picturing a few cops just unloading and of course putting holes in the kid. i wasn't there so i don't know but if swat was there i'm thinking they could have put a sniper close by and just mainlined his fucking head

i don't think you can judge the police's actions through a text document, but boon is right... where were the snipers? i've seen them shoot guns out of peoples hands on real tv...

thats why i said i'm not trying to pass judgement.

of course the cops can't be expected to just stand there and get sprayed with bullets but their number 1 priority is to preserve life.

i wish i could see film of this so i can make a judgement. like you said about shooting guns out of peoples hands, they can do that shit. i mean, there was swat called in you would think that there would have been a sniper in the vacinity that could have fucking popped him in his dome or dropped him from behing or shit man, couldn't the cops have fired about 50 shots into his legs. dude would have dropped the kid and they could have taken him out.

who knows, maybe it couldn't have been avoided but it's sad when a toddler has to be taken out.

i heard on the radio the dude shot at the cops several times and shot at them when they were trying to get the neighbors out and he came out unloading with his kid. I dont know eather i wasnt there but fuck that guy for doing that to his kid.

They still killed a child. I'm a nra member and an avid shotgun shooter and when you take your required classes for permits, they tell you that when you pull the trigger, be prepared to face the consequences of your actions. Cop or civilian, they still killed the child and should be prosecuted, unless the father grabbed the child after the shots were fired. Thats just my opinion.
