smart guns....lets discuss this

i really don't want this to turn into a debate on outlawing guns. i'd like to see what you think of the smart gun.

colt is working one now and they have working models. the gun houses a computer chip in the grip. the owner/authorized user is required to wear a wrist strap that looks like a watch in order for the gun to fire. the wrist strap sends a signal to the gun so it will function.
they said 12% of all cops killed are killed with their own guns.

this way if someone takes their gun or someones kid finds their gun even if it's loaded it won't fire unless they have that wrist strap on.

i think this is an excellent idea that still needs to be tweaked for all types of users.
i'm not a caop and i don't carry but i sleep with my piece on my end table. if someone comes in my window at night and i grab my gun in a panic but i forget to put that strap on my wrist then the gun won't fire. what am i to do? sleep with the thing on my wrist???

thats my dilemma but i think this is a great idea.

Uhuh, sleep with it on your wrist... I doubt it'd be too much hassle.

This is coming from someone who doesn't like guns; I think this sounds like a pretty good idea.

when that first started to come about i heard about possible fingerprint systems to... i dont know if i'd like it i like to know for sure my gun is going to fire, i dont want to be in a shootout and my watch battery die and then i die... the idea is good, its getting it to be 100% user friendly i think

on that note, i'm goin to pass the academy.... i'm always gonna carry that .357 on my ankle, plus a taser in a tactical thigh holster... but most likley i'll just let rex chew on him for awhile behind the cars camera

boffin, i know it's not a big deal sleeping with that on but there should be a better way.

i think it's a great idea. i'm all for gun ownership but also for gun safety and responsibility

I def. like the idea for police. You go to work, you put the strap on, you get off work, take it off.
But like boon was saying, they need to come up with something better for everyone else...

Lol I think it's kinda a weird idea...

First off: If cops are stupid enough to shoot themselves...well, I don't see the problem.

And I think most crooks are gonna find a way round...

As for others who use their guns irresponsibly...well some have to learn the hard way...

who said anything about cops shooting themselves? i said that 12% of all cops killed on duty are killed with guns that are taken from thm by criminals.

i think with a little tweaking this could work great

how about a small computer chip implanted into the owners hand or wrist. that would be a pain in the ass, but might work. but who would really be willing to get a fucking chip implanted theres conspiracy theorists that would think the govt is gonna track them through it. which they may be able to do.

how about on the part of the gun you hold..., the grip, there is like a palm pring reader. and like a rounded out space that fits the owners hand. so when yopur hand is in the designated groove type dealy, it scans it and takes off a safety that is otherwise always on.

i hate the idea, and being about a week away from being on the streets i can say i'd never use one..... not gonna trust a fuckin battery with my life, give me a gun i can take apart, inspect and just know how it works... i can't tell if a computer chip isn't in working condition....

in the next few year's you won't have to worry about that. It will be a battery transmitting a weak signal to a wrist band... trust me, geeks can make this shit perfect...
I would bet anybody that within the next 15 years, smart guns will be in use in at least some police stations in the US

i bet within the next 5 years they'll be in use and people will hate them when they first come out but as people see they function perfectly they will start to like them

it will take a few years to perfect, but i think if they work well, people will like them. it is a very good idea and in the case that you have a model that works good then i don;t see the problem. as for taking them apart im sure you will still be able too. just get the chip inspected like once a month where ever you bought it/

colt has been working on it since 99 and thye already have functioning prototypes. they say that they need to put them through extensive testing now to make sure they work the first time every time for as long as the person or the officer has the pistol

i'm all for making guns safer.

yeah dude, if they are gonna take a big step like that they sure as hell need to do it right. there first model malfuntioning or something in an important situation would really fuck over they're sales. im all for safer guns aswell, hell, if they can make em, and make them good. then i think they should. you still have all the protection of a normal gun plus even more if it gets snagged by a nagger.

i wish there was a better idea than the wrist strap but they'll get there. i like the idea of a gun that won't fire in someone elses hands though
