GLENEAGLES, Scotland - World leaders concluded an economic summit shaken by terrorism on Friday, offering an "alternative to the hatred" — a $50 billion aid package for Africa and up to $3 billion in additional support for the Palestinians

The leaders also endorsed a deal reached by their finance ministers last month to cancel the debt of 18 of the world's poorest nations, pledged universal access to AIDS treatment, renewed their commitment to a peacekeeping force in Africa and heard African leaders promise to move toward democracies that follow the rule of law, he said

Anti-poverty groups praised the pledge to double aid for Africa but said the increases should be made more quickly, given the number of Africans dying of poverty and disease

The G-8's aid increase could save the lives of 5 million children by 2010 — but 50 million children's lives will still be lost because the G-8 didn't go as far as they should have done," said Jo Leadbeater, head of policy for British-based Oxfam International

Guess they'll be able to afford that 8th Bentley now....I support cancelling the debt, but, this extra money will never reach the people imo.....just like when we all got together after the tsunami and the world donnated billions and billions..now, money is no longer the problem, it's getting it to the areas it's needed and using it to rebuild the parts of Asia that were affected by the tsunami.

Wiping the old slate clean is a good thing as a starting point, but I wish there was some kind of specialised aid comittee in place (almost like another version of the IMF) that could co-ordinate aid and liase with each country in question, making the governments fufill certain criteria, subject to review, and if the country failed these criteria and proved itself only in the scheme to try line it's own pockets, it would be punted out.

But this comittee would be more like a task force than a financial institution, kind of like what we're trying to do in Iraq (restoring water/electric, rebuilding etc) where the aid we provide means largescale well-building programmes, education, healthcare.......we provide the basic infrastructure, teach the people, then leave......it still costs money, but we spend the money for them instead of just giving it straight to their governments, and we directly educate and train the people firsthand, so the governments can't just bullshit and keep all the aid while pretending they're actually puting it to good use.. I suppose you could go as far as to call it 'soft capitalism'. But 1 African country at a time, that way, you get to see if it'll even work, and if it does, it would hopefully send a positve signal to other African countries that aid can work.

I really don't think that increasing the monetary aid will help though. I don't get why we can't help out by sending actual food, water, equipment and shit and distribute it ourselves. Just take the however much is just gonna be wasted as it is (probably like 40 billion

) and use that to fund the project. Just throwing money into a hole isn't gonna help the people get themselves out.

cause boffin. it still cost money for the food, to get the food there, to distrubute the food there. it's taxpayer fucking monies man..i don't want my money going to feed a shithole country where the mass populas is going to die anyway.

i would rather the states invest their part of that 50 bill into something else that will directly effect americans.

fuck those people....it's not our job or responsibility to feed them.

top it off and they all agreed to give 3 billion to the palistinians(sp)to help form a government over there.

the united states should feed people in the united states. i just can't see the justification of feeding people in another country when there are plenty hungry in our backyard
