| Freak | what kind of range is on the wireless networks? i was in my dining room on the notebook fucking around on the net and my mother in law came over. my father in law stays in the car cause he has md and can't walk. anyway i went down 15 stairs, through the hallway outside and all the way to teh back of the parking lot. i sat down in the car next to him and i was still connected to my wireless network. i'd say it was about 200 feet from the door to our building to his car and my signal was strong. of course i'm not complaining but i didn't think the routers had that kind of range. annon, i'm talking to you |

I have amn early g d-link model, that shit blows, it used to work ok now its just always losing connection and going slow as fuck, i gotta buy a new one. But one of my neighbors has a newer model g linkseys and i can get good ass fast internet through them with a low ass connection | ||||

| Hence, my self-loathing | Re: what kind of range is on the wireless networks? Some of this is true. Wireless transmission is effected by many factors. Attenuation of the signal is caused by the path taken to and from the Antenna. Open air, line of sight transmission is of course the best range option. In a home, every wall, piece of glass, etc attenuates the signal. Plants, and Water (water coolers & large fish-tanks), of large appliances (Metal) like washers, and Refridgerators, cut the signal greatly. The types of walls matter too. Brick or masonry has a different attenuation factor then Sheetrock, as does insulated vs. non-insulated walls. Then you must factor in interference from other Wireless network devices that may be in the area. And Wireless phones (2.4Ghz) and Microwave ovens. I have seen some wireless go great distances, and others drop-off by 50% in less than 100 feet. The main issue here is, If you know your signal is getting "out" of your house strongly, be sure you have all the router security working correctly to prevent people from using your bandwidth or connection. There was a chart I had seen describing the attenuation factors of wireless, I'll see if I can locate it. |
