My opinion on socialism is you work for the "good of the state" and you have no other choice really. Capitalism allows for both closed proprietary software and open free software, it doesn't delegate who you work for and what you can do. A lot of the FLOSS movement is based on what is considered "socialist" ideals, but if it wasn't for the freedom that is provided to do whatever it is in your free time we wouldn't have people like Linus Torvalds and Richard Stahlman contributing greatly to the community.

Usually that's what's been advised in the past and what I was told in my Linux class in college, but from what I've been told by a couple of guru's at gentoo forums is with more and more ram being shipped in systems that swap is being used less and less and doesn't need so much space.

It's really not that difficult once you get used to it. Once you get all your flags set you pretty much just leave them. It can definitely get harry when you are installing something and it says it's missing a required dependency, and you check and it's already there, so you have to go through all your flags,kernel driver config, and stuff, then re-emerge/re-compile the program/kernel.

One thing I love about gentoo is the documentation. It is simply the best documented OS there is. Have a problem? Check the handbook. Not in the handbook? Check the wiki. Not in the wiki? Search the forums (gentoo forums search sucks hard, so I use google to search their forums). Not in the search results? Ask the forums. I've never not been able to figure something out.

Also the complete control of the OS you get, especially with gentoo. You build the OS from the kernel up. The whole process I consider 'fun'. It's work, no doubt, but fun. if I don't want something, for example if I don't want 'tif' support in gimp I can remove that flag and it won't build support for that file type.

ever heard of rpath... is portage the main doodad they use in it? i remember watching their sales pitch... very enticing. heh.

if even for improving the autosuggestions that surround me, in a kinda conscious derren brown sort of way... i'm downloading enlightenemnt as i type. :)

It's by far my favorite desktop. I was on E16 for a while, loving it. The desktop itself took a total of a whopping 8mb of RAM at the very most and was averaging about 6mb. E17 uses a bit more ram (like 20mb) but still has some nice eye-candy and still really smooth and fast. I think they did an excellent job with E17, and to this date is my favorite desktop manager.
