| Luvin Pedagog | Fuckin A! I'll have a J! aw sweet! a herb friendly forum with a place specially for us geeks. sweet. any linux folk in da house? i been with linux since early 2004 having been looking into it for the previous few months and a bit. the Open Source ethos was so inspiring. what joy it brought me. k, normally, i can't stand that hand gesture for all the associations it picked up last century, but i just cant resist this, if only for the ... the thing the banana is riding: ![]() mkay. back to linux... where was i before being distracted.... oh ya... so, its been a few years with linux, i started with suse 9.1 and i've had a suse on my computer almost constantly since (currently with 10.2, i actually bought 9.2 pro). I've been a serious distro surfer, and that got even worse once i learned how to chainload properly. musta seen well over 50 distros by now. i've filled at least once o those big spindles with cds and dvds o distros. suse still stands out for one thing... yast. i just aint seen anything that beats it yet. some come close to offering the basics of just the configuration management, but for the install... nah. i still use suse to manage all my other opperating systems. ok... the geeksics: hds: an old 12gb (my first, aw) 2x 60gb ide 300 sata. 1tb lacie big disk 1gb on my recordystick and 1gb in my camera. so, i have one of the 60s and the 12 in my old pc ("FuzzyLogic") with some unknown gnu|linux on it (i cant remember, and it wont tell me!) and a duffed dual boot. only just got it up n runnin couple days ago since it's monitor went to... "LevinRhan" my glorious new pc... athlon, dual processor, dual core, 64bit 4200. mmm. ![]() 2 gig of 333 ram. nvidia 7800 gtx. 2 monitors. which is connected to my A1 printer, one aspect of the main porpoise of me using computers... a computer to me, really, is little more than a jumped up paintbrush. ... ok, once u connect it to the net it becomes a library & ultimate learning tool and communications device n all sorts too. but mainly its a paintbrush. ![]() so on the 300gb sata, i have windows xp (packed with all kinds of "essential" goodies for someone using a pc in my feild of expertice) and SuSE 10.2 (which atow aint booting, i know why too, soon fixed). the 60 in LevinRhan is partitioned pretty much as such unused 2gb fat unused 2gb fat 50mb fat for GRUB bootloader extended- 4gb SWAP SuSE 9.1. (just for nostalgia, and for various tools until i get around to fixing 10.2's boot) Mandrake~ sorry, Mandriva 2008 rc2. (i really dont know why... must have something going for it) Sabayon 3.4 the full version. (nice to have a source install. heh. it does loads out of the box, and being gentoo, has the best documentation if you're looking to actually learn) StudioUbuntu 7.04. (well, it works, it's ubuntu (a billion noobs to support me. ooh tongue n cheek geek humour), and its aimed at me, having video, graphics and music stuff) ZenWalk Linux 4.8. (just installed. WHY dont zenwalk like my puter? it seems like it would be such a nice system... but have yet to see it ever despite this being like the 3rd time o dling a version... i'm just about to learn how to edit my Xorg.config, or Xfree86config files n such as main project just now is to get dual monitor support working as i want it (ie, not just showing the same thing on both screens~ as nice as it is) in Sabayon & Ubuntu. oh, and there's about 25gb left on the hd for more... and that should give room for more than a few distros as i'm gonna be checking out the little ones... Puppy, graphpup, slax, damn small linux, and a handful of others whos names elude me too! ok, if you're still reading, you're in the right place. you're a geek. that just wouldnt be interesting to anyone else. hehe.i had fedora on my pc a wee whiley ago... it impressed me outta the box alright. it managed what no other had.... detected the connection to dad's windowsbox. i even managed to transfer a file or two... then for some reason i have no idea why... it stopped being able to do that. bugger, so close and yet so far. meh. anyways, now i have two PCs sitting next to each other, i find i have the potential to be much more productive... any time one is doing something i have to wait for (booting, rendering) i can still be getting on with stuff. perhaps not such a great thing. how do you spell R S I. ![]() now if i could get FuzzyLogic to connect to the net... mmmm. i have the cable running under the floor ... leads to dad's pc in the hall (currently plugged into his network card) where he connects via a usb modem, which still seem to be the bane of linux's existence. surely they'd be making support for such things for linux first n foremost since linux is more the networky sorta thing, no? anyways, by this point you may have realised,.... im not a real geek... a real geek would have these issues sorted in a second. and you're right. i'm an artist! can you help me get my paintbrush to work! lol. got a netgear router for which i have misplaced the power lead sitting next to my two pcs through in what you wouldnt believe is actually supposed to be my bedroom. an A1 printer takes up alot of fuckin room. anyways... i'll leave yas with that. this has been the most fun i have had for a first post on a forum ever. yay. dont worry, i'll go off and behave myself like a normal patron of the forums now. ![]() Enlakech! -Digit. ps, hehe, woops, stood here for ages not knowin how to post, not understanding teh error message i recieved back. not realising that's a line for tags, not for a tagline. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

| Brofessor | Re: Fuckin A! I'll have a J! First thing I gotta ask. Are Digit from Grasscity? (ah, already answered) Been on Linux for just a tad over the last year to year and a half. Tried Ubuntu, Slackware, Fedora, Mandriva, OpenSuSe, and the current one I am using is Gentoo. I do have dual boot on both my desktop and laptop both with XP and Gentoo. 64-bit version on the laptop, and 32-bit version on my desktop. Incredibly stable, and love how configurable everything is. Laptop ( Dell Latitude D520, Intel Core2 Duo 1.6ghz, 1gb ram, 15 inch LCD ): 80GB. - XP installed on a 20GB partition. When I got the laptop I had to use Partition Magic to shrink the partition. 20GB partition for Gentoo, and then 40GB in FAT. Why so much swap? It seems to me that's just a waste of space, especially with so much RAM. Originally Posted by Digit

It can be a bugger at times with the USE tags and getting your CFLAGS, etc correct, but by far is the most powerful and configurable software repository.

Might as well mention that the other distros I'd like to try are Arch, Wolvix, ELive, and Vector Linux. Also would love to try some BSD flavors. Tried any of those? Originally Posted by Digit
