When U2 takes the stage of the Rose Bowl on Sunday night, the Irish band will have performed 42 shows on its 360° tour. They will have played in front of almost 3 million fans, broken dozens of attendance records and grossed close to $300 million.

They will have drawn rapturous reviews, made the cover of Rolling Stone and given the troubled concert business a gigantic shot of adrenaline.

What they won't have done is make any money.

The U2 tour is so elaborate, its 170-ton, $40 million, four-pronged stage so enormous, its overhead so costly that the band has been on the road for four months just to cover its startup costs.

They're finally on the verge of hitting the break-even mark -- just in time to shut down for the winter, because the weather's getting too cold for outdoor shows and their stage is far too big for indoor arenas.

Even when the band heads back out next spring and starts earning a profit, they'll be burning $750,000 a day in overhead as three separate models of the biggest stage in rock history hopscotch around the world, each attended by a separate crew and each requiring close to two full days just to dismantle.

The financial picture is not completely unprecedented (the most extravagant of U2's past tours, such as the Zoo TV and Pop Mart excursions in the 1990s, also took some time to break even) but the band has never before had to work for this long before seeing a profit.

And their two previous tours in this decade were relatively stripped-down affairs that took place mostly in indoor stadiums and didn't require anywhere near as much overhead.

I tried to watch some of this concert last night, but I tuned in during set break and did not feel like waiting. I never checked back.

Any band these days would love to sell a million records, but for U2, that high number is not enough. The multi-platinum rockers told the Associated Press that they're displeased with the sales of their latest album, 'No Line on the Horizon.' Recent U2 albums have been selling in the three to four million range, while 'No Line' has only broken the million mark. Bono and company see factors such as the lack of a hit song and the fickle public's need for a "diet of pop" are contributing to this so-called slump.

"We weren't really in that mindset," Bono said about the lack of a commercial hit from 'No Line.' "We felt that the album was a kind of an almost extinct species, and we should approach it in totality and create a mood and a feeling, and a beginning, middle and an end. And I suppose we've made a work that is a bit challenging."

"The commercial challenges have to be confronted," bassist Adam Clayton said. "But I think, in a sense, the more interesting challenge is, 'What is rock 'n' roll in this changing world?' Because, to some extent, the concept of the music fan -- the concept of the person who buys music and listens to music for the pleasure of music itself -- is an outdated idea."

That said, this isn't the first time that U2 is failing their own high expectations. Remember the group's 1997 album 'Pop'? Widely considered the group's worst album, that too failed to yield a mega-commercial hit that they had achieved with 'The Joshua Tree' and 'Achtung Baby.' That Bono says the new material is more challenging is indicative of this facet, but still, the band continues to try and reach new audiences with a recent partnership with BlackBerry and an appearance on 'Saturday Night Live.' So they're not giving up hope.

All of this said, U2 probably doesn't have much to worry about. They're currently enjoying record-setting numbers for their '360 Tour' and have an ace up their sleeve -- next week will mark the release of the deluxe version of 1984's 'The Unforgettable Fire,' which featured a little song everyone might have heard of called 'Pride (In the Name of Love).'

I am not sure what he is getting at. He makes it sound like they recorded some kind of Chess Session Blues album. I guess he thinks only a musician of his caliber can listen to music from a different time. And "us" music buyers only want more technology in there songs. Yet I can't recall the last time the Edge's guitar actually sounded like a guitar (only kinda kidding).
