Ok, Jude, resized and ready........this is a really beautiful painting.....but I'll leave this one for Jude to talk about......I'm going to upload some other general pics of some native edible plants and fungi (it's a hobby of mine)

I really dig plants (duh, it's a hippy-thing I guess! )

Ok, Jude, here's some pics of some of the stuff you can find locally.....

Pic 1: Amanita Muscaria......very common around here, you can usually find a group of these amanitas growing under birch trees (their favourite spot).....one fungi this size should be large enough to let 1 person trip. I've never tried amanitas, because I hear that the psychoactive substance, muscinol, is actually a mild poison......I don't actually know if this is true though...

Pic 2: Brambles, or blackberries.....these berries can be a little tart on their own, but they make great jam, and taste cracking if you make them into icecream or if you make bramble pie & custard...agin, these things grow like wildfire all over the place

Pic 3: Ragwort...this plant is often confused with St John's wort, which looks very similar (but St John's wort ALWAYS has only 5 petals per leaf). You don't want to eat this one, it'll make you have sickness and the shits......a favourite with caterpilars tho.

Pic 4: OK, introducing quite possibly the strangest looking fungi you're ever likely to see...the sulphur polypore, which is more commonly known as 'chicken of the woods'. Not only is this thing edible, but it both tastes and even has the stringy texture of chicken...I've eaten it!! Best cut into small cubes and boiled up in a casserole. A small percentage of people will be sick from eating this, but that tends to be people who have dodgy tummies with shrooms anyway.....

Damn I thought I had more pics of plants...I'm going to have to go out again and snap some other interesting plants and trees.......anyway Jude, you been out snapping those pics of your local flora yet??

great thread and great pics! did you get the one from the kodak software? there are 4 nature pics...but kodak software sucks
the painting is and oil 36"x36" (pretty big!) and it's called "poppies and calandulas at wellsweep" completed last sprig(04)

Yeah I did, few years back...actually, I submitted the amanita pic to Erowid (and they used it yay!)

I just like knowing about native plants...what you can eat, or use medicinally, and which ones are lethal! The chicken of the woods was the most awesome specimen I've ever seen...but it was in some woods on the outskirts of town and got utterly trashed..so it died off which is kinda sad seeing as it was the only one I was aware of in the entire region. :(

I'll have to get out to take some more pics.....I love sharing what I know about plants...I mean, right now, there's some great camomile (make into tea and drink, relaxes you) yarrow, um, wild cabbages growing on the cliffs...and you can eat nettles (tho they are starting to get a bit past it)....plus a lot of mushrooms that are both the edible and hallucinogenic varieties!

I'm worried we're going to have a bad mushroom season...it's been very dry this year, so we'll see.....magic mushies will be coming up any day now.....I have to take some pics.....we get ours from this glacial valley which is really stunning...only thing ever built there was a Roman observation post.....anyway, yeah, I'll get some pics of psycilocybin semilanceata.....let you see 'em.....(tiny but mighty!!)

cool imperial karin! what are wild cabages? can you tell me the latin so i can tell what they might be if they are here. one of my fav plant facts is the use of jewl weed to aply on poison ivy-they usually grow side by side
